It all started at the end of the 1980s, when Joaquim Tomaz da Cruz, APSL member no. 178, decided to buy some mares and the horse Xairel (Herds. de José Infante da Câmara) to start the stud farm.

At the forefront and as the foundation of the stud farm were mares owned by António Paim, Paulo José Carvalho Vidal, Coudelaria Marques da Graciosa, Alexandre Calheiros Ferreira and Isabel Maria Lopes Nicolau.

These came full by the horses Ajax II and Englobado, both from the National Stud Farm, plus Manuel Tavares da Veiga's Novilheiro. In 1992, Legionário officially became the first offspring to be born at the Tomaz da Cruz house.

In order to provide a better natural habitat for these animals, in 2000 they moved from Quinta das Fontainhas to Quinta da Carrasqueira.

The year is 2016 and Joaquim Tomaz da Cruz leaves us, with great sadness for all those close to him. But the seed was more than sown and with all the knowledge acquired over the years, and always by his side, Ana his side, Ana Tomaz da Cruz, his daughter, and Afonso Tomaz da Cruz, his grandson, are now at the head of the stud farm. with the same interests, enthusiasm and desire to elevate the PSL horse.
